    Single rack and pinion?

I'm just getting started with a design for a router with a long skinny cutting surface (30"x96"). The bed is going to be a torsion box. I was wondering if it might be possible to drive the z axis with a single R&P mounted to the underside of the torsion box with the motor mounted on the gantry cross brace that goes under the bed. The rack would be centered under the bed.

Only going to cut wood or foam.

I'll try to get a quick drawing done here shortly. I'm just spitballing the idea right now.

Assuming you're talking about the X axis and not Z, sure, that could work, if your box is stiff enough. But you'll have to do something fancy to get clearance for your motor, since the pinion gears are usually smaller than the motor diameter. Probably the easiest thing would be to mount the rack on a thick piece of aluminum bar or other extrusion, which would help with flatness and stiffness while spacing the rack out to where the pinion could engage with it.

Yeah X axis. Wow I'm going to plead a lack of coffee on that brain fart.

I like that idea. Plus it makes mounting the rack easy.
