BMC 20 Encoder Fault Z Axis

I keep getting an Encoder Fault and Servo Drive shutdown on my Z Axis when I try to calibrate and home my machine. Is there a way to test what is going on? If so how can I do this. I was thinking that the drive might be bad and I sent it in for repair. $1400 dollars later I still have the same problem. I checked my motor wires to ground and all seems fine. I don't know how to check the encoder. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Try slowing the speed down before you home it.

I have a md3 with the ultimax 2 controller. I have a parameter screen where I can change the IPM. I also have a knob on the controller also.

What controller do you have ?

When you turn it on, press the manual button, power button and then start button.

Then press the input button, about half way down is the parameter button. Press that

Then chance the second from the top. Start at half the value

Thanks, I will give that a try in the morning. Have you ever had this problem with your machine?

I have seen this message show up with a stuck limit/home switch on x. Check that the switch is not stuck.

Also its funny when you send somthing in for repair they charge you out the a$$ and it doesn't fix a thing. When this happens you just assume the charge was because they had to test it and they actually repaired nothing. Or maybe its for wear on there eyes for having looked at it to hard.

Yes, that is what I have been thinking about all night. For that kind of money I did expect different results.

Can you post a picture of your pendant? I wish my Hurco had one.

Hey Steve, I was wrong, my control is a Ultimate Max 3.

I did slow the feed down. It was set at 400 ipm I set it to 100 ipm. I tried to calibrate the drive and it faulted again. I also checked the limit switches and the seen to be ok. Is there a hidden screen that I can go to see the limit switches to be sure they change state?

I also put the machine in manual and was able to jog the X & Y axis. They work as expected. When I tried to jog the Z axis the drive a
Faulted. The indicator on the drive shows a 1 and only the middle green led is on.

Your Servopack drive is faulty. Error 1 usually means a bad IGBT module. You could pull it apart and try replacing the module as a starting point.

What would cause the module to go out? I just got the drive back from repair and never worked. Where can I get a module? Thanks for the reply

Look it up on eBay. I've never heard of one but they have hundreds listed. Seem to be pretty cheap so maybe worth a try. Make sure you get the right one. What exactly happens when you try to home. Does it move at all or just fault right away?

If it never worked in your facility, could it be a power issue?
