    Compression Cutter for Melamine

Hello, I am new to this forum and new to the CNC world. I recently purchased a MultiCam 1000 and I am having an issue with the 3/8" solid carbide compression cutter. The cutter works fine however during the entry and exist into the sheet, it produces a chip on the top surface which is unacceptable. Could this be due to the fact that I have it set up to enter and exist on an incline? Would a straight plunge in produce zero chip out, or should I use a different cutter? Any help would be great....thanks

We ramp in on an angle, so that when the bit touches the surface, it's a small distance away from the finished edge.
If you ramp down right along the edge, you'll frequently get chipping. Plunging would probably chip worse, and will shorten tool life.
The longer the ramp distance the better, as it'll be removing less material as it enters the board.

Quality of the melamine also makes a difference. The harder the surface, the less likely it will be to chip.

Also, a mortise compression bit with a shorter upcut section can also help.

Thanks ger21...I just have to figure out how to ramp into the material away from the cut line.
