Importing and working with a STL file within Rhino

I want to import a STL file into Rhino and use a solid to divide it but not having any luck. Is there a file type other than the native Rhino file that will work.
    Thanks

Rhino is a NURBS modeler, not a mesh modeler, so its mesh functions, while better than they were, are still rather weak. But it does have some ability to deal with meshes. You say you want to "use a solid to divide it" - what do you mean by that, exactly? Is the solid also a mesh, or is it something you created in Rhino? If it's the latter, you might try meshing it first (using the Mesh command), and then using the Mesh Boolean commands - these let you do unions, intersections, and differences between meshes.

It would be a Rhino shape. I want to put a head on the top of a rocker and want to take out a section to match the top post. The head would be make of a different wood then the back post.
    Thanks for the reply

Just test it. Box mesh, sphere is solid. Works good. I used _MeshBooleanDifference command.
May be you had not closed input mesh?

I just tried STL and its really not all that great. Can you try Iges or STEP? Those seems to be much much better into Rhino.
