This should be a good project for the good old PIC micro.
Enjoy!

Interesting advert......"at a price you can afford.... $15,000 for a set of wheels ".
That's my income for the last two years.
"Pimpstar" - that seems appropriate somehow. Does pimp have the same meaning over on your side of the pond ?

Yes. I figured they would probably be the only ones who could afford it.Originally Posted by greybeard

whoever said pimps are not intellectuals?
oh, current american youth dialect\vernacular utilizes 'pimp' to mean 'good, high quality, flashy, impressive, etc'
much like you mighy have once called something cool(apparently like the jazzster hipsters did in the 50s)..
example "did you see tim's new rims? theyre, like, computer monitors N shizzit. that is pimp, yo!'
Considering the traditional role of a pimp, if what you claim is correct, then current american youth have a very debased view of what is good, high quality, flashy, impressive, etc.Originally Posted by vacpress

While I agree with the American youth statement to a degree, let's not forget that there are many of our youth who are outstanding people!

No greater love can a man have than this, that he give his life for a friend.
Well....I don't see any problem with the wheels....maybe we should marvel at the application of technology......
I'm rather marveling at the waste of money.

I can see it now: Videos playing on an endmill holder while running that long milling job.
american youth is in fact debased.
but then, so is the youth of europe as well... just not as thouroughly...at least that is my impression...
remember. emminem is considered age-appropriate here.. kids who should be into mr rogers and sesime street are into gangster rap and semi-pornographic pop performers.. this is, of course, to sell things...
everyone knows sex sells... even to 8 year old girls(britany spears), and violence sells as well, especially to 8 year old boys..(video games, emminem, rap in general, alot of rock, cartoons, movies...)
we are ****ed.
The wheels are cool, youth is youth. I seem to remember many a recess playing War and making machine gun sounds. My folks probably played cowboys and indians. Now about those wheels...
Look up Propeller clocks to see how the technology is done. For under $200 a guy could do it all himself. I think if a tech geek were to do the work and not pi$$ the money away (I used to be a rodder and I remember rodding cost $$$ back then too) a geek culd do way cool with his wheels saving the bucks for other worthwhile mods like glass packs and dingle balls.
yeah. tv seems to have a cultural position it didnt before..
but the wheels.. it may be a bit costier than $200, the complexity is fairly beyond that propeller clock, yes? that is a fairly basic, 1 color 'image'. this is, it appears multi-color LEDs, so 65,000 colors? i guess some good coder could use graphic libraries to scan the image, control the LEDs, and time it all to stay in sync with the motion...
how do you think the speedometer works? the in-transit image transmission? it seems like a big project..
Bearing in mind that things like tyre pressure sensors are passive, like pet tags and anti-shoplifting devices, the first challenge will be power. Now that's a picture I like: a pimp kneeling in the mud, with his shifted centre of gravity through all the gold, changing 4 sets of battery's to keep up his "style".
My guess is that for constant orientation they used a MEMS gyroscope. They are also used in model helicopters for steering help.

For tire possition it could be as simple as a magnet afixed to the wheel and a sensor that picks up the magnet. Why introduce complexity of a pizo gyro if it isn't needed? Ignition systems have used this magnetic pickup positioning for decades now and cylinder timing is critical. Wheels don't spin at 4~8k rpm, so a sensor and magnet would work just fine.
Custom motorcycles have been using bicycle speedos that use a magnet and pickup for speed. They work quite well. Now about all those colours... Always a monkey wrench in the works.
Some guys have more money than brains.
But the blond getting down on her knees to check out the wheels ain't bad.
I saw a product similar to this on Beyond Tomorrow using LEDS and a spinning bar with reflector timing strip. You could custom program your own displays or download them from online and upload them to the spinning bars. These were used on F1 and other race cars for advertising over the past few years but now they seem to have brought the cost down I want to say the entire 4 wheel set was $300 or so. These only used red LEDs however from what I saw. Anyway looked neat thats about it. Seems like the thrill would wear off quick. I never understood the spinning rims or now this display rim since I can't see my rims when I am driving. Amazes me how much money and effort some kids put into rims and stereos only to look like fools really. Sad part is as "cool & hip," as they think they are, 9 out of 10 probably could not tell you the cube root of 27 from their head. Assuming they even know what you are talking about to begin with.
