I couldn't find any examples on the website.
Would like a reasonably priced cam that supports 4th axis machining...which it looks like it does, but what about 2d and 2.5d jobs?
Simply importing a vector file and setting pararmeters...?

DeskProto can indeed do 2D CAM: in a 2D operation you can import a 2D DXF file, the cutter will follow the lines in that drawing. In the 2D operation parameters you can set the cutting depth. For a rotation axis job the 2D drawing will be wrapped around the cylinder shaped stock.
I need to mention though that the functionality for 2D is (by far) not as complete as for 3D.
To test this you can use the wizard "Basic 2D machining" in the trial version, and for more information you can read the lesson on 2D machining in the Tutorial book. Both are downloads on the DeskProto website.
