Usb SS + G540, charge pump question?

I am in the middle of a rewiring of my control cabinet with the usb smooth stepper i purchased a while back and have hit the wall trying to tune the motors.
I have read that the smooth stepper may not require the charge pump feature on the g540. and also that the g540 has a switch for turning off the charge pump.
i have tried the setup with and without the charge pump however neither setup got any response at the motors (the g540's status light, lights up only if the charge pump is disengaged).
the smooth stepper drivers seem functional (i get consistent status lights from the board) and the mach3 profile i am using is just like the G540.xml

It seems i just need a few notes on how to setup the charge pump. Do i need one? could i still use it?

if anyone has some info it would be appreciated.

I just had a another go at setting up with the charge pump engaged. no result.

I have the charge pump set to: port1, pin16, active high,
in the general configuration i have set: charge pump on in e-stop.
i have tried two different cables
and when i refresh mach3 i get the message: external e-stop requested

if anyone knows what i have missed please, give us a shout!
