I am in need of help with developing a flat pattern layout given a 3D model. The company I work for does a lot of hydro and bladder press forming. Most of what we do is complex forming on at least one flange with the web typically being flat but not always. At any rate, does anyone know of the best way to lay out the flat patterns for these parts and get us fairly close on first runs? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is pretty amazing, however we use CATIA. Some of the parts we have I am not able to "rebuild" in the sheetmetal workbench

Solidworks - sheetmetal has the flat pattern "suppressed" in the feature toolbar.

Who uses CATIA except some extremely complex/extremely large industry? The problem sounds like you're importing models into catia without the appropriate information to population a flat pattern.

I've done this at my work, we also use catia. There are varying levels of the unfold feature and the basic sheetmetal package can be very limiting... With some of the advanced surfacing packages you can unfold virtually any shape but it's huge dollars.
