Hi just thought I'd come here and ask as I am lost on this one.

I work as a CAD/CAM programmer for a small engineering firm, we just took delivery of a second hand Hurco VM10u I have spent most of the day on the shop floor getting familiar with the control. I will say it is quite intuative to get to grips with. I have learnt to use the laser tool presetter fine. BUT the problem I do have is with the renishaw probe...

I have put new batteries in the probe, but it seems that when I put the probe in the spindle the machine doesnt activate the probe or even know its there. I may be missing something, but I really dont know. I cleared the spindle and manually loaded the probe and when I use the softkeys to access probing cycles like setting my X for example I get a warning to ensure the probe is present and check the batteries. Is there something I am missing or should be checking etc? I am basically looking for any guidance. We have someone coming in on Thursday next week to get us going with the machine, but I would rather figure this out before then. I know I can just set my datums without the probe but I would like to know why it isnt working so far.

What model of probe is it? I am guessing OMP and either 40 or 60.
Just checking in case is RMP or a 400/600.

give the part probe a tool number and in the description make sure it says probe. you will have to measure the part probe length with the tool probe
