I have an old Bridgeport Series II that originally came with steppers, I don't remember what the control was. We first changed it to PC based control back in 2003. I am now re-visiting my entire setup in preparation for an important job.

It has a 5 tpi ball screw and 2/1 gear, so at 2000 steps per inch I figure with the original drives (I assume they were full step) the best the machine could do was .0005. I would like to shoot for .0001.

I currently am using Sure Step drives and can set the steps anyplace I want. Somehow I wound up at 3200 steps per rev with my previous drives. Am I right in thinking that I should just be at 1000 steps per rev? There is no benefit in more steps is there?

Assuming I get the backlash compensation handled what is the best I can expect with this setup?
