converting a solidworks file to g-code

    Hi guys -

I'm reasonably new to the world of CNC - in terms of the design software. I do know a bit about the controllers and machines.

I have a straightforward question, which may not have a straightforward answer though.

I have a solidworks drawing which I need to convert to a g-code in order to have a part machined.

the file was given to me, and I do not have any info about toolpath etc.

The two files I have a .sldprt and .igs file extensions.

Is there a specific piece of software that I should use to create the g-code or should I give the files to a machinist, and have them charge me $ for the conversion and machining??? I am led to believe different controllers require different files.

    thanks in advance

G code is generally generated specifically for each machine. I would not run G code you supplied without rigorous review.

You usually supply the model and they generate the code and run it.

You will need a CAM software, There are plenty but generally they are rather expensive, The best solution would be to use a contractor that has licensed software and knows how to use it.

    Hi Joey,

Are you a Solidworks user? If so, you can download for free a CAM Plugin for Solidworks known as HSMXpress. I use it daily to create my G Code from my Solidwork files.

Would you like some help now? Or are you all set with CAM now?
