Sure, and in fact that is how I had done all the other cutting. But I had already profiled the outside of the part, and I was going to surface the entire part. So I had no top edges to clamp on.

    Re: CRP4848 Nema 34 Build

So the machine has been working really well.

But it is time for a spindle.

    Anyone ordered this from solar.jean?

2 2KW Water Cooled Spindle Motor ER20 Inverter Drive | eBay

Or should I go with this from automationtechonolgiesinc.com

2200w 3HP Water Cooled CNC Milling Spindle, KL-2200 | Automation Technology Inc
2.2KW (3HP) VFD Spindle Inverter (KL-VFD22) | Automation Technology Inc

If anyone has a recommendation please let me know. I might order as soon as the first weekend of January.

I bought mine (spindle and VFD) from world-etrade this year and its been great. Item came from California too, so shipping was fairly quick.

Good info groc, and a better price because of the free shipping!

Anyone have a good source for er-20 collets? I will need at least a 1/2 and 1/4 collet to get me started. And maybe another collet nut to make changes faster

I purchased techniks er20 collets from ebay. One of the best T.I.R. out there, especially for the price. They are about $15 a pop.

you want to be careful with using different collet nuts, as those chinese spindles are balanced with little dimples on the nut.

That should be to balance the nut, not the spindle. The spindle should be balanced without the nut on it.

    Re: CRP4848 Nema 34 Build

Another thought just occured to me. My CNC Router lives out in the unheated garage, and it is winter.... How do I aviod problems with ICE forming in the cooling system? I was thinking of doing a tiny radiator mounted on the back of the X carriage to keep the lines short. And I am unsure about coolant to avoid freezing.

My router sits in the freezing garage too. I use safe, non-toxic antifreeze. It's usually labeled as RV or Marine antifreeze. You should be able to find it just about any big box store this time of the year. I believe I mixed half water and half antifreeze.

Ok, I think I have figured out everything except one last question.

What wire do I need to run from the VFD to the Spindle. I assume some sort of decentgauge stranded wire to keep from breaking. But I cannot seem to find any information on the required gauge.

    Re: CRP4848 Nema 34 Build

To control these inveters from my PMDX-126 I believe I need a PMDX-107, which requires 5 wires for control. I think.

So I think this is my purchase list:

Ebay Spindle 2.2 KW and VFD

20 feet 17awg stranded wire for spindle power. IS 17gauge enought?

XLR 5-pin Panel mount for the control box.

XLR 5-pin Cable from control box to VFD

    Spindle Mount

    PMDX-107 for spindle control

And a couple of er20 collets, and maybe an extra nut or 2.

Anyone think I am missing anything?

I looked at your power cable there and IMHO its to small. 14 AWG is for 15 amp circuits. The 2.2KW spindle will be pulling 9.15 amps steady state at max power on a 220 circuit, adding the minimum 50% safety margin the minimum size wire should support 14 amps. 17 AWG is down in the 14 amps or so. Running the wire to small will impact your performance. On all my 15 amp motors such as my 7518 I run at a minimum 12 AWG wiring. Other than the wire size it looks like a good wire......

On an unrelated question I am rebuilding a CNC that may have been a warthog and the wiring is pretty banged up. Can I ask what size wire you used to power your stepper motors????

    Re: CRP4848 Nema 34 Build

    The wires came from CNCRouterParts.com

High current CNC motor cable | CNCRouterParts

And I spoke with a fellow CNC enthusiast that also happens to be an electromechanical engineer. 17-16awg wire should be perfectly fine, as 99.999% the time we will only be operating at a fraction of full amperage. If everything is working properly Remember is 3 wires carring the power, not just 2.

    Re: CRP4848 Nema 34 Build

16 gauge for the spindle would probably be best, another option for wire would be: igus® Chainflex® continuous-flex cables: Chainflex® CF31 motor cable PVC . That is what I used when setting up my spindle, defiantly nice quality.

Something else that should be mentioned, the connectors that come standard on top of the spindles are pretty crappy. you will have a hard time fitting and soldering the wiring in the included plug I would suggest replacing them with something more beefy. these are the ones I used: spindle: C016 20C003 100 12 Amphenol-Tuchel Electronics | 361-1090-ND | DigiKey wire: C016 20H003 100 12 Amphenol-Tuchel Electronics | 361-1078-ND | DigiKey

There is a thread on this site documenting the replacement and grounding of the spindle body on the fourth pin, however im having trouble finding it currently. I will keep digging

as well, just for the options out there, this is a nice low cost option to controlling the vfd. Plugin Mach3 pour VFD Huanyang | Le royaume d'éole

    Re: CRP4848 Nema 34 Build

    New Toys have arrived!

Still waiting on some parts so may be a few weeks before I can get it all installed.

I love that it came with all those collets. Now I don't have to order more right away. The ebay listing stated basically "what you see is what you get" so I thought it only came with 1/2inch collet.

    Sylvain,

The diagram has been updated, and we're also adding another diagram to clarify the wiring to the connectors on the input signal board.

    Best regards,
