Exclamation Fanuc Oi-TB - Fan alarm, but fans are working.

    Hey Folks,

I'm getting fan alarms for both X/Z inverter units, but the fans are working fine. I was able to clear the alarm once by shutting down/turning back on, however now it won't clear at all and I can't run the machine like this.

    Alarm
444 X AXIS: INV. COOLING FAN FAILURE
444 Z AXIS: INV. COOLING FAN FAILURE
608 X AXIS: INV. COOLING FAN FAILURE
608 Z AXIS: INV. COOLING FAN FAILURE

    Any ideas?

I'm assuming its a 2 in 1 drive? Its the fan inside the drive, the drive also monitors fan speed like a PC.

I believe they are separate drives - I can look down through the top and see the fans spinning on each unit. I tried a bit of compressed air to see if it made any difference.. it did not.

You are correct, it looks like a 2 in one unit. I can see the fan at the top working great, I even pulled it with the quick disconnect lid and cleaned the contacts. Is there another fan inside?

I guess I'm going to try replacing the fan, even though it's working... it's possible the tachometer has failed.

    BadTad,

It is unlikely that the fan's tach has failed. As Underthetire mentioned you need to look inside the drive. About the best comparison I can make is a desk top computer. They all have fans in the case (aka the fan that you currently are looking at and which is running), however many computers also have a fan on the processor, chipset and/or video card that can generally not be seen without taking the computer apart <- this is the fan that Underthetire is alluding to. It is likely attached to the drives processing unit and will be a smaller fan.

Thanks - I looked inside and did not see anything obvious, I'll ask fanuc if there is another fan in the unit and add it to my order if there is.

There may be one on the back of the aluminum heatsink area, not sure on that. Fanuc should have the break down parts sheet for that unit.

Found the other fan, I had to pull the drive, it was on the heatsink on the rear that I could not see. Getting it on order as well. Hopefully will be back up and running tuesday. I wish I would have kept track of everything I had to do to get my shop going, it's taken me almost 2 years to gather equipment and repair it...

Just wanted to update you and let you know that the fan install (both of them) fixed the problem and I have no more alarms!
