Hacking a series wound universal motor to build a constant speed motor ?

    Hi All,

Is there a possibility of modifying a series wound universal motor (AC) as a shunt wound universal motor to make a constant speed motor ?

A universal motor series or shunt wound run about the same, that wouldnt make it constant speed.
Both types are happy to run from DC to maybe as high as 400 hertz AC with very little change in rpms no load, but they both have very poor speed regulation.

A speed control with tach feedback maybe could keep both types running at a stable speed, but theres much better motors out there for that type of control (permanent magnet or 3 phase).

There are controllers out there with tach feedback such as SuperPID, see Lengthy thread here on it.

Thanks cgo. but shunt motors are said to have speed regulation!
Al_The_Man, that's cool. It seems this address my requirement.
