I've been busy for few weeks. I'm back on this project now.

This guy is for A rotary:

Here are my updates for the Z axis and the spindle:

Linear rails for Z axis with flange sliders to match up with a heavy Z:

    Spindle Assembly:

    And an interesting process:

    Thanks for watching it.

    excellent job !

i guess its more what you can get your hands on rather than doing it 'right' ... just like here in africa

you should grind chamfers on the edges where you weld to get a proper fillet weld, specially on 1" plate !

    Hello,
After a long break, the machine is on the way to finish.
Here is some updates on this little mill

    BT30 SK16/10, SC25 Nikken used holders.

I'm waiting for 2*150 QKG Precision vise from China. It makes the machine a little heavier than 1200 Lbs.

Here is how it looks in real life. It will be covered in white.

I plan to make a concrete base for this machine. But It's pretty solid now.
I can't find thick square tube steel near my house so I made them by 45mm solid cylinder steel.

    Fantastic build.

    What you have done better than anyone else I have sen anywhere;
    1. You used thick pieces, 1". Well done.
    2. Your volume is not too large WRT to the frame sizing
    3. The Mitutoyo indicator moving within +/- 1 micron on the rail is absolutely wonderful.

    Congrats.

The z-axis is quite high, but you can always just machine keeping the head as low as possible.
    Excellent work, design and execution.

Thanks for your compliment. I'm very happy that you like my build. To achieve this tolerance within +- 2 micron. I have to spend about 1/2 hour each time on cleaning up the grinding table.
The Z axis travel is 300mm. The bottom of end mill is about 3" offset from the table and It's the height of the vise. This machine a gift for my friend. He will use it for making guitar tuning machines.

I'm working on another project for the larger carving machine with higher feed rate. The size is about 12x20".
All parts (ball screws and Roller Linear rails) is C2 precision so I have to be careful.

Here is the heart of this project. I got it for $400. It's used and come with the original box.
    3kw, 334Hz, 20000 RPM, 6*7xxx C P4 bearings inside.

    Some updates on this machine.

The tooling is 16mm insert carbide. I've made a mistake on the toolpath. 2mm each pass with 10mm stepover. Z axis was vibration and It's made the surface looks a bit rough.

HSS 10mm end mill, S 3000 RPM, 1mm per pass.

Re: 6x12 weld steel hobbies build.

Here is the first part was made by this machine

10mm Carbide end mill, S4500, F500. It was better than HSS end mill but still didn't archive the result that I want it to be.

The surfaces around the circle is exactly like what It's in cad. It was my mistake.
It's a little rough at the side of this part and tolerance is 0.02mm. The top surface is nearly perfect.
I will make another toolpath soon.

    Tremendous build.
    Well done.

I guess steel is cheap in Viet Nam )))
Did you made heat treatment to all those welded parts? Becuase it can bend a bit during lifetime.

Re: 6x12 weld steel hobbies build.

Steel costs about $0.8/kg. I don't know if it is cheap or not compared to another country.
I didn't make treatment because It's expensive for me. I don't think much about bending so if there is any tolerance made by unstable steel. I just accept and life with it.

This build has started in August 2014 till now. The steel has been welded for few month. I made some adjustment on this machine using Chinese vise as a guide (+-0.004mm, checked on a grinding machine) yesterday.

I'm happy with this build except there is a little vibration on z axis near the sliders when it cut steel. Other parts is no vibration.

I added more pictures and video about the ability of this machine FYI. This is a used end mill with a broken flute on the blade I bought for $2.5/piece.

    Hi gt40,
Thank you. I admire your works on your Epoxy Granite project.
I'm gonna finish this machine with A axis then move to the next build which is something related to epoxy granite for the base of Y axis. I've bought a 30x60x8.5cm used T slot table for this project. It weights about 100kg.
