We are having an issue with inconsistent clamping of the tools in the our Mazak Slant Turn 30 ATC/MC. We tried the obvious of making sure there were no chips behind the tool. It seems to be worse on the OD tools and is not specific to any pocket. Does anyone have something specific that I should look for when I tear into it to find the problem?

I was having the same problem and discovered yesterday that the locating pin that orients the tool holder was broken. Think the operator crashed the machine and said nothing. Searching to find out is anyone has changed one of these? Looking at the diagrams it is inserted from behind the tool socket.

We rebuilt the entire tool changer and all is good. We believe the biggest contributor was the Belleville washers in the clamping mechanism. Tested them with a load cell on an arbor press and they were about 1/3 of what they should have been.
