HI GUYS, new to this forum.
need some advise on what make of drill point sharping machine i need to sharpen drills up 5/8 " dia, possible semi automatic, it needs to give a good professional ground point, because of budget restraints it will need to be a used machine. regards arob.

I have a drill doctor the 750 model (I think) and it works fantastic. I thought it was going to be a bit lame because of the low cost but man, it works and comes in real handy. Top off a bit is just a few seconds!

I had a drill doctor 750 till it blew its motor a few weeks ago. I have had it a bit over two yrs. I can't seem to get a hold of anybody to source another motor for it. The unit is underpowered anyway, so may look for an alternate motor for it. Don't expect any support for it when it needs something.

With all due respects, WHY buy a machine? With a little practice, you can free hand sharpen most any drill! I found a "mentor" who showed me how to do it in 15 minutes. His method was a little different than my dads that I could never learn, but the point is it can be done. Find a "Old time machinist" as he had to learn how to do it as an apprentice!
The money saved on a machine leaves me more for other goodies:})

if your burning thru so many drills then wouldn't you be better off using carbide drills for your app
this is obviously for production so is the job cost not great enough to be able to simply turf burnt drills , hss drills are dirt cheap and hardly worth grinding anything under 1/2" in a production atmosphere ,
if its at home then thats a bit of a different story
If you are set on buying a grinder then I'd say darex is the way to go

I just bought a Darex 3000 expandable. Great machine. I opened a cutter grinding company this year. The wheels are not cheap. Good luck.
Anyone own a Cuttermaster end mill grinder? I need some help with the finer points of this machine.

hi big sky, good luck with your new company. I not sure if i can give you advice on your cutter master or not, it wouldn't hurt to fire a few questions at me and i'll see how i go.
Can you give me more info on your Darex expandable,i.e. price,time to sharpen a drill (load to reload) approx, does it grind the correct clearance angle as per set on the machine, after grinding do you have to re adjust the drill to split the point, does it have a tandency to burn the point.
