    Hurcu KM Quill

I am trying to disassemble a Hurco quill to at a minimum regrease the bearings, and maybe to replace them. For the life of me I can't get the retainer in the nose or the nut on the top to move.

I found one little set screw that appeared to be holding the retainer. It has been removed.

There was one locking tab that appeared to be holding the nut. It has been folded flat.

    Now what?

The rear nut is out with use of penetrating oil, and a drift. Even after soaking for an hour it took a couple pretty healthy whacks with a 16oz persuader to get it free. From what I have found so far I think that nut may have been over tightened.

The front retainer is still firmly in place. I'm going to put it in a plastic bag, spray a bunch of penetrating oil in there, and leave it over night. Its a trick I have used before for things that are hard to "soak".

    Re: Hurcu KM Quill

I made a spanner, and got the spindle nose retainer off. Today I pressed
all the bearings off/out and took a look.

I have not washed the grease and dirt out of the bearings, but one of the
ACBs doesn't feel wonderful to me. I figured as long as I have it apart I
might as well replace all the bearings if they don't cost to much.

On the back its got a Fafnir 206PP. Seems to be pretty easy to find.

On the nose its got a pair of New Departure 20207 ACBs. Those also seem to
be modestly easy to find. What got me is they don't seem to be a matched
set or anything. There are no alignment marks and they are both marked
identically. They are just back to back against the spacers.

It does have both inner race and outer race spacers between the ACBs and an
inner race spacer between the ACBs and the rear bearing so preload is pretty
    much predetermined.

None of these bearings are particularly expensive. Seem like an off the
shelf bearing, although most I found are new old stock rather than new
    stock.

Am I missing something? Is it really just as simple as it seems? Just buy
a couple New Departure 20207s and a Fafnir 206PP and press all the new parts
    back in place?

New Departure went out of business in the 1990s,

Your Bearings should be a 30deg AC bearing Matched Pair, for Back to Back mounting

You may be missing some letter or other numbers, unless someone changed them for a standard C3 Bearing which is no good for a spindle bearing

This is some other bearing manufacturers numbers they are normally an ABEC7 Grade, & are not cheap, if you find a low cost for these Bearings, then you have the wrong Bearings

    7213ATDC9-P5

    Barden 207HDL

The top Bearing is a standard Deep Grove Ball Bearing sealed 206-2RS this grade is a C3
