Where are you getting your timing belts/pulleys?

I'm getting pretty irritated trying to find timing pulleys/belts. Ballscrews are fairly easy to find but trying to find belts and pulleys for a reasonable price is a pain in the ass.

I'm trying to connect 10mm ballscrew shafts to 1/2" motor shafts. At this point I'm thinking I'm probably going to have to direct connect them but for my Z axis I'm going to need to mount a pulley to a THK DIR 1605 driven ballnut (apparently no stock option exists so I'm gonna have to find a way to machine the pulley and drill the holes ).

What's the deal? What is the most common form of these bloody things? Standard stuff (ie. XL L M etc.)? Metric stuff (3m 5m 8m)? It seems like there is tonnes of proprietary stuff (which is super irritating).

    Any suggestions?

    have you looked here? https://sdp-si.com/eStore/CoverPg/Drive_Components.htm
also ebay has a bunch of pulleys.

I have used XL pulleys, but they have shallow teeth, maybe not good for a whole lot of power, Im sure there are specs out there somewhere.
I think HTD pulleys are good for high power.
Personally I just look for the cheapest option with 5mm, .2 or .375" pitch, they have belt calculators to get the right size belt also.
You can probably find a pulley large enough to bore a flange for the ballnut, and just drill the holes to match.

s well as the sources already mentioned, I also go to one of the local bearing suppliers for Martin Sprocket and Sheave, they usually bring them in, in a day or so.

Re: Where are you getting your timing belts/pulleys?

Thanks for the replies guys. I have mostly just been looking on ebay and it's a bear market. I just got a quote back from Martin through Wajax at almost $200 for a pair with no belt.

I think you're right about the drive size, I think XL is too small so I'm going to look at the L and M8 stuff. How widespread/common is HTD stuff? Is it proprietary or do most manufacturers make something in the HTD style?

I have CUI AMT102-V encoders that have a max resolution of 2048ppm, so about 5.8 pulses per degree, and the ballscrews have a 5mm pitch so about 0.0005"/deg, is there any point in running a 2:1 ratio on the XY or should I just direct drive the ballscrews? I'm starting to think I should just direct drive the Z off of the existing gears too. It's a PDM-30 machine, or RF-31(?) for you guys in the US.

    Cheers,

These guys seem pretty reasonable but their pulleys are really small.

Yeah, their prices are asinine. $60 for a 30 tooth L type pulley with a 1/2" bore.

Wow, never seen that kind of price through a local Canadian supplier?
BTW, Misumi pays the brokerage so no import fees to Canada.

what size do you need? I found 72 tooth pulleys around 4.5" diameter.

I use .2" pitch XL 30t pulleys on my lathe, they are around 1.9"

Not entirely sure but I was thinking I would try for a 2:1 ratio and the one needs to be big enough to machine so I can mount it to a THK DIR 1605 rotary ballnut. Probably something in the neighbourhood of a 3" and 1.5". Just not sure if XL will do the job or not...?

It looks like XL is pretty limited as far as torque ratings.
GT 3 or 5mm looks like a good pick.
I'm not familiar with the rotating ballnut, does the pulley need to mount to the smaller flange or the larger one?

I asked if they had bigger L timing pulleys and they want to make something custom for me.... lets see how expensive this is gonna be!

The bigger/outer flange is stationary and bolts to a part while the inner ballnut spins. The timing pulley bolts to the inner ballnut.

Re: Where are you getting your timing belts/pulleys?

so you need something with atleast 36mm of flat face to bolt to the ballnut. From you illustration, there is no locating bore for the pulley? The bolts locate the pulley concentric to the ballnut?

they have plenty of options in gt and Htd 5mm, I think either would work. You would have to machine off the hub, and bore it out to clear the ballscrew, then drill the bolt holes.

    here is one option

Re: Where are you getting your timing belts/pulleys?

Well THK came back with a price of about $800 for that ball nut. I couldn't hang up the phone fast enough. I am going to modify a chinese ballnut and mount the pulley to it so the plan has changes slightly. In any case, from a cost standpoint, I am going to machining timing pulleys to get what I need so now I'm just going with the cheapest option. At this point, the only chinese pulleys I can find are XL.

Ok, check these guys out. https://www.beltingonline.com/

This is what I consider reasonable prices on this stuff. The shipping is INSANELY expensive though. I sent them an email to see if they can adjust their shipping prices.

OK, I'm an idiot. I didn't realize that B&B Manufacturing do have all of their prices and everything listed on their site, their prices aren't bad AND they have GT2 5M & 8M pulleys and sprockets. If their website wasn't so bad I wouldn't have wasted a week trying to deal with beltingonline. Just so everyone knows, beltingonline is a HORRIBLE company. Their customer service SUCKS.
