Just thought I would share my recently (nearly) complete conversion.
I still need limit switches, speed pickup, auto start/stop to complete, but I have it done far enough to make some chips.
It is working pretty well.

How bout a fanuc control for the diy builder. Maybe at the diy price range...Oh well just a thought.
Get 0i-D mate - cheap as chips.

Wow .... I have searched this site for a detailed retrofit of this style lathe but only find details and pics for smaller lathes like the 10 x 22 or 7 x 12 lathes... so this build thread is very timely for me. I was hoping to find a 1340 size but I found a hardly used 1236 with stand for $1100 so will be picking it up this weekend with intentions to cnc it.
Thanks for the detailed information and great pics ..... keep it coming !!!
I'm assuming you used servos ???? and Mach 3 ????
Thanks again for sharing
I will get a few more pics, got the speed sensor put on.
Going to look at doing some limits.
Yes, motorcycle fork boot covers, they are very very reasonable. I had to put 2 together on one end, but they are working out great.
Using Mach3 for control.
Nice find on that 12x36 it should be almost identical on the conversion.
for the electrical parts, I am using
IMS 7000 stepper driver & 1200oz stepper on the X axis
Kollomorgen servo and servo driver on the Z axis
C10 breakout board
would like to also put a vfd on it or at least start/stop from Mach3
