6040z Gecko g540 conversion wiring question

    Hi all,

So this is my first foray into CNC machines. I have done some extensive reading here and bought the 6040z and Gecko g540. I was able to power up the g540 and hook up an E-stop button to get it to cycle between ready and fault mode. Now I am hooking it up to my x-axis motor on the g540. I have 4 wires green, red, yellow-green, and black and was wondering how can I tell which two go to which coil and how to tell which are +/-. Any help is appreciated.

    PS: I'll post pictures soon.

    Thanks!

    Here's a good wiring diagram for G540s: http://www.homanndesigns.com/pdfs/EN010_V8.pdf

It includes the connections for the steppers and the DB9 connectors.

You can tell which stepper motor connectors are the two coils with a multimeter -- there should be continuity between A- and A+ and between B- and B+, but not between other pairs.

Great tip thanks, that should have been fairly obvious to me. So what happens then if the polarity on the A coil or B coil or both is backwards?

    Thanks again!

If the polarity is different the motor will turn in the wrong direction.
Reverse one coil pair wires and it will turn in the opposite direction.

Thank you I appreciate the response. I was looking at a few sources to see exactly how stepper motors work and I found this: How Stepper Motors Work

Looking at this is it safe to say that it won't matter which coil I deem coil A and which I deem coil B?

It does not make a difference which coil you deem A or B.
If it does not spin the direction you expect, reverse the wires on one of the coils at the connector and it will spin in the opposite direction.
