Servo motor for CNC Lathe project

I'm willing to build a CNC lathe. The most important part for me is the spindle motor. As far as I know it must be a servo to control the revolutions for threading.

The distance between centers will be 400-450mm so it is not that big but I will cut hard stainless steel or equivalent materials in hardness. Can you help me finding a suitable servo motor that is not so expensive.

I found this motor on e bay but I don't know if it is strong enough for the machine.

... or can I use a Nema style stepper motor as spindle?

I use normal elektro Motor and Vfd but an encoder on the spindle i would use normal steppers for x and z axis . I think high speed servo aß Motor is possible but May be too Slow
    Just my 5 cents

Re: Servo motor for CNC Lathe project

Excuse my stupid question. So what is the best way to make a lathe if you want to cut thread mostly? I only used manual lathes and they include gears to make threading possible but if I am to build a CNC lathe it doesn't need to have any change gears. Am I correct? So how the machine synchronize the speed of the spindle and the cross slide to cut a thread?

    Hi
    there are no stupid questions
it is true you don't need gears anymore on an cnc lathe ,..
i googled for you "linuxcnc lathe thread"
and all the links explain it more or less how it works

my favorite is Lathe Spindle Encoder
i would use an CUI AMT103 encoder but that is just details

That's a neat idea. Now I'm thinking of rotary encoders. Can Mach3 work with it?
