Building a 4th axis for the plasma table. Need to get it done fairly quick so i decided to use a trailer spindle and weld on axle.Here are a few pics. Ill post again when its all working

Dave: That is a pretty neat idea! What kind of runout do you think you will see on the hub bearings? If you are using steppers a 10"1 belt reduction would give you pretty good speeds. You need about 30 RPM to do tubing down to 1" diameter and that gives you 10X torque. How do you plan on holding the pipe? At Fabtech I saw several high end pipe cutters and several different support methods for longer pipe. Are you planning on cutting any pipe for joints (saddle cuts, miters etc) ? I will work a deal with you on our PipeFit Plugin for SheetCAM that designs pipe joints in 3D and draws them in SheetCAM as 2D toolpath to use with our Rotary Wizard for MACH

I checked the TIR and it was around 3 1/2 thou.Most of the runout is in the 4 jaw chuck but not to bad for a 140 dollar 8 inch chuck. I currently have 7 to 1 reduction. This setup will be mostly be cutting short 2x3 tubing like the pic. Those tubes are turned in a jig three times. I just got the sheetcam rotary plugin and its pretty impressive. I would def be interested in your pipefit plugin. Im going to build a stand alone round tubing cutter with a smaller 3 jaw chuck for that.Got the ground strap done today and hoping to cut and bend the sides tomorrow.

Looks like a crafty way you have rigged up to cut those in the pic, I will have a try at that.

Now there is an innovative plan. I too will be watching for updates on this thread - great job! The cuts on that tubing look great - do I understand that you had to reposition them three times? If so the stops and starts look very nice.

So this is the fixture. you take out the slats and bolt the jig to the side rail. The rails are cut with the top of the tube just out of the water. Rotary should save lots of time on these.

Got all the parts together and started cutting tubes.Made a quick adjustable roller to support the end of the tube. Im happy with the rotary axis.Here are a few pics

Looks great Dave. I like the rollers. It looks like you could make a few extra and clamp or screw them on to the slats for longer tubing. Thanks for sharing.
