Hi, I'm thinking about buying a used sinker EDM for making coin dies. Have never ran an EDM before. I have done a little cnc milling coin dies in steel. I expect I can make my own electrodes.
I expect casual use, maybe a few pieces a week.
Would like to hear any advice on buying a used sinker EDM especially if it relates to making small coin or embossing dies. Under 1 square inch of area, .010 to .020" deep. Maybe deeper on embossing dies.
Any thing to look for or avoid especially in a used machine? Any brands or models that are well regarded? What kind of start up costs am I looking at? How much above the cost of the machine?
How is parts/service availability for older machines? What kind of training is needed?
Also wondering any experience in how long it would take to burn a die like that, say 1 square inch .020" deep. How long might an electrode last?
Any general advice?
Thanks in advance.
