if its a red encoder, just bolt it on (4 bolts=not timing required)

if its a black encoder its a littlework...
    1)remove motor
    2)release brake if equipped(90 vdc)
3)hook up a DC source -+ to pinA, - to both pins B and C(a couple size D batteries are enough). just touch the wiresa couple times so the rotor settles to one spot
    4) I used a homemade LED box, but you can use a 4 channel scope, four VOM meters, whatever... watch signals C11/C12/C14/C18
rotate encoder shaft till all are on, and C18 is at its breakpoint...look at the keyed shaft relative the 3 mounting bolts, and the motor shaft- is there a orientation that looks like it can line up? if not, rotate
pulsecoder 90 degrees, reverify signals... there will be only one mountable position...mount it up, snug the center bolt, and leave the outer three screws loose enough you can slide it to adjust...
    5) reshock the motor, reverify 11/12/14 are on, and 18 is near its breakpoint- on or off, close enough
    7) tighten the three screws

if motor/encoder havent been screwed with, there is usually timing marks- a line on one tab, and a small punch mark near one screw hole, but not always, and often on the old robot servos ive seen them off by a fair amount...
