    Tool lines are off surface

    Rhino 5. Madcam
    Attachment 267932
Do the madcam lines represent the tip of the cutter when surfacing?

    Attachment 267934

These planer lines are not on the surface at least as they are represented here graphically. They seem to be about a quarter of an inch off the surface.

I have not tried to run this in mach Click image for larger version.

ID:	267936three yet but in the graphic simulator it looks perfectly fine it's just the lines don't correspond with the surface.

The toolpath you see represents the center of the cutter. I'm guessing you are using a ballnose tool. If you say the lines are .25" off the surface then you are probably using a 1/2" ballnose.

Nothing to worry about here if that's the case.

Re: Tool lines are off surface

We discussed the logic of showing the toolpaths from the center of the tool early in version 5 development. I was a proponent of doing so as it becomes very difficult for the user to distinguish between whether he used an endmill or a ballnose if the toolpaths look the same for both in some cases. I've posted illustrations in this forum showing the difference, and why illustrating toolpaths from the tip will get confusing. Search for it on this forum.

If you can't find it, just picture cutting a "U" shaped part with a ballnose tool and how the toolpath would look as it follows that shape. If illustrated from the center it will be consistent. If illustrated from the tip it will vary from touching the surface, to moving away, back to touching at the bottom quadrant.
