    Airline travel

Has anyone ever flown with a magnetic base indicator? No one at TSA even knows what those are so asking them is a mute point. Same with the airline. I am traveling to check out a machine and my boss wants me to bring my indicator to check for backlash. I will only have a carry on bag and a laptop. An indicator and base is the only tools I will need to bring.

I used to travel with a full tool set, but never carried it on. I wouldn't worry about it though, maybe bring something with you just to show how it works.

    Re: Airline travel

I have never had an issue and I travel all over the USA and Europe with my machinist tools. I pack all my inspection tools in my carry on including mag bases, indicators, and calipers. Most hand tools as well go in carry on. For the unusual tools I will print out instruction and an owner's manual to keep with the tools so you have pictures of what the tools are used for. The only time I've had an issue is they sometimes pick up residue for kerosene but that was only once. I make sure to clean everything with acetone before I leave. Happy Travels
