"edge finder at those speeds" WHAT! No no, no. We are on a different page here, No, edge finder does not spin in this case. Please be careful, I don't understand and that's ok. I have been wrong before, lol.

    stu

Other than that I use a solid edge finder (a probe) I consider accurate. Tramming or truing up a part, vise or work piece I suggest an indicOL.

    Edit: indicOL, https://www.google.com/search?q=indi...Q&ved=0CDEQsAQ

I have several, so nice and easy to use.

Edge finders work best at 1k rpm. 6k will scatter them all over the place. 10k gets real exciting BTDT.

I use solid probes as I work in tool steel and setups need to be quick and reliable. Winding up edge finding probes result in a box of broken parts.

underthetire, lol. 10k gets real exciting! Toss whats left in the damn box after you get it out of the chip conveyor. This is funny in a strange way.

    My 2 cents.

Guys, but how you get a spindle to run at 1K rpm. is this possible with a "real" spindle controlled by variable speed controllers?

Most of the time I use them is in vertical machining centers, so yes 50-14k infinitely variable. That's where I miss typed in MDI 10k instead of 1k. Less than half a second from 0-10k rpm and nothing left of that edge finder. So quick even the beaver tail pucker switch wouldn't have stopped that one.

There are different types of spindles. A spindle on a router can not be spun anywhere close to 1K rpm if you don't want to kill it.
Spindles on mills can spin at very slow speeds.

I appreciate the help, but some of gents like to speak in code and its confusing.
I just located the zero of a piece of alum. with a metal edge finder at 8 rpms and it was fine. Unfortunately I do not have a real spindle on my cnc router but that will be my my next upgrade.

If your finding the edges of aluminum, use some probing routines and a piece of precision ground drill rod chucked in the spindle. Quick and easy.

    Look through this thread.

Hi ger. In reality I need to be able to find the edges of any material I cut.
Just an update, my edge finder broke at 8K rpms =( definitely the tool for a CNC router type machine. I need to invest in something else.

    How about this?

The Makers Guide - Triple Edge Finder - THE MAKERS GUIDE

Or, you can just hold an aluminum plate or angle against your edge and probe to that.

Re: How do you use a test dial indicator to find a center

I wanted to know if the same method can be used to find the center of every type of dial indicator. I have bought a dial indicator from NRI parts ( https://www.nriparts.com/tools/measu...ial-indicator/ ) and I want to use it to find a centre. Can someone tell me if the process will be the same?

Sorry you have the wrong type of indicator. What you need is a dial "test" indicator to use the methods mentioned.

    https://www.shars.com/product_catego...Test_Indicator

The link is to the correct type of indicator. Stay away from the .0001 indicator it doesn't have enough travel to be easily effective. Stay with the .0005.

Quality baby, and usually the higher end ones have jeweled movements. I have indicators that range from $200 all the way to $2150. Don't think i even own one that measures less than .0005. My $2150 one gets down to micro-inch or nanometer. Stick with cheap ones for now, the more expensive they get the more it hurts when you accidentally smash one.
