    7x lathe spindle/indexer question

Just converted my 7x lathe to CNC on both X and Z axis with ball screws, timing belts, pulleys and NEMA 23 motors, Mach3 and Win7. Works great.

I haven't yet set up spindle control and was wondering if anyone had done or had an opinion on converting the spindle drive using a NEMA23 300 oz/in and timing belt drive with multiple pulleys. The point being it could be used as both an indexer and as a spindle. Would there be enough torque to handle a timing belt and pulley setup that would spin up and down at a max 1500 rpm (for polishing)? say a 3:1 pulley at 500 rpm. And indexing using 1:1 or 1:3?

Hope I have asked in a way that makes sense.

    TIA

I wouldn't recommend it. The stepper motor would put out far less power than the existing motor. Adding an encoder is much better.
