Using a proximity sensor as a tool height setter...

I'm thinking about using a npn proximity sensor to set my tool height.

I'm using a 1.5kw spindle on a cnc router table and the tool is not grounded.

    Has anyone successively done this?

    Thx.

I haven't but I'm not sure you will get the required accuracy with a prox.

A long time ago we used precision switches from these guys: Precision mechanical switches | Baumer Group. You would have to build a fixture to probe against and to protect the switch from over travel. At a minimum that requires a mounting block, plunger, spring and some miscellaneous parts. We could get 1 micron repeatability with the fixture in good condition.

Since the ends of different tools will present differently to the prox sensor, the height won't be consistent. What I mean is there will be more or less metal presented to the prox because of the different flute/end geometries. As for the prox being accurate, I use them as limit/home switches on my mill and I tested them for repeatability using a dial test indicator and they are repeatable to about 0.0003" if presented with the same target each time.

Use a mechanical switch plunger type but first check out your skip signal.

    Proximity will not work properly.
