I think you could post this in woodworking part of the forum for better responses. E-bay is the cheapest source. Check out the treads first before buying anything. Sometimes members sell their own stuff.
What sizes are you wanting to use? I have 5 and possibly 7 ballscrews I am going to sell so let me know the sizes and see if anything I have will fit.

What lengths do you have? I might be interested in a 42 and 24 inch.

I can help if you don't mind second hand slides. These slides were salvaged from automation system used in semiconductor industries. I brought 3 THK KR33A and built my homemade CNC router with them. Could not detect any backlash using a 10 micron resolution Mitutoyo dial gauge.
Hello,
My past experiences were wirh rack and pinion for larger machines, so I'm partial toward them. They are inexpensive, easy to implement, have minimal backlash when the pinion is spring loaded into the rack. Most times a speed reduction is used, although I have direct drive on my machine. With 10x microstepping, my resolution is .001". If you are interested, I can email you pictures.
I also use cold drawn flat bars for machine ways along tieh sealed bearings.
