Greetings,

I just picked up a used Multicam MG204 with a 4 hp Colombo spindle.

I want to replace it with a spare 10 hp HSD and Yaskawa VFD.

Unfortunately, the Yaskawa model does not do MODBUS. Is it possible
to configure a Multicam to control a VFD by another means other than
MODBUS.

Prior to this MG204, I'd had AXYZ machines. They didn't use MODBUS.
They used EMOP to control the speed. If your VFD didn't have EMOP,
you could still configure it just to start and stop at whatever speed you
had the drive configured for.

I'd rather not spend $1200 for a VFD when I already have 3 on the
shelf.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Yes inside of the parameters for your Multicam you can disable mobs, you will most likely have to use a pot for speed control.

I to picked up a used Multicam MG204, extra, couldn't resist it :->
just today I was looking at the (small) VFD that's in there and noticed it wasn't driven by mod-bus like my other MG204
it's most likely 0-10V ( maybe 4 - some mA )
its connected to connector bottom-left on "the brains", marked S1
same connector where the 5V comes in

Thanks for your response. I haven't had a chance to power it up again to test it. I can live with with a pot. I've got one already but it's not too speedy.

This control board is a older style, Modbus wasn't used consistently. Normally is your control board combo front/rear control boards m24rev 5/k520 rev 5 control boards, Modbus was generally used.

to me is the newer board, it's been put in ~8yrs(?) ago
i do have an older board laying around
this is the running the ATC-firmware
I took it out of a 1 tool machine, VFD is now running on modbus

this is how the analogue control was wired

Sorry I've not responded sooner. Thanks for posting those pictures. I finally had a chance last weekend to try wiring up another VFD without modbus. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to go. There are two wires I couldn't track down. In the photo, they are under 760 and 3041. Both appear to be black.

I'm up and running none the less. I just wired it for manual control.

running VFD on 0-10V, quite easy . . .

connector PH1, bottem-left, 9 pins
feed 12V from external ps, very little power needed,
pin 5 : 0V
pin 9 : +12V
pin 6 or 7 or 8 : 0-10V tot vfd input

open "MotionMechanic"
type (copy/paste) :
196 get_integer .
if not set to 0 yet
type (copy/paste) :
0 196 set_integer
and again to make sure :
196 get_integer .

Reboot - Load Init File

this worked for me, although, when running spindle warmup, at the end of it the VFD keeps running the last speed, doesn't go 0 rpm
rpm can be lowered on pendant though
didn't try what happens when running a program
