    VFD tripping

Hey all, I posted a thread here last weekend.

My VFD kept tripping and I couldn't tell if the VFD or the spindle was the culprit.

I can't find that thread now, may be it was moved?

Anyhow, turns out it was a short between my cable shielding and one of the motor phase wires. I had connected the cable shielding to my ground wire, so my best guess is when the phase wire started shorting to the shielding it was not getting enough power to the spindle so it was not turning fast enough so the VFD was doing it's job in shutting down to protect spindle from being damaged. Also explains why I had to start spinning spindle by hand so it would know which direction to go. Swapped the ground wire for the damaged wire and so far so good.

It took me a week and the purchase of a new spindle and VFD to figure it out, so I though I'd pass along the info in case anyone else has the same problem in the future.

You are very lucky that you yourself was not zapped

Your shield should not be connected to your Ground wire, your Ground wire & shield should be independent of each other

The shield Termination should be as the photo

However the shield and the earth ground should be at a common reference, i.e. earth ground.
It appears the problem was the shield shorted to one of the motor conductors.
