Are you using air assist? It does help some.

There was a thread on this a little while back and someone suggested trying an inert gas. Nitrogen, CO2, or Argon might work. One of these days I plan to try some Argon on wood since I have a tank for my TIG welder. I am not really sure if it would work good or not. The lack of oxygen will keep things from burning, but I wonder if you will still get good results cutting paper or wood without burning. Something like acrylic is vaporized. I don't know that you so much vaporize wood or paper as much as burn through it, which of course leaves burn marks.
