gecko drive and nema 23 motor - resistors

The nema 23 motor that is connected to a gecko g540 drive is getting extremely hot. I have tried resistors of 3.3k, 3.4k and 3.5k. I have to put a couple 100 in line with a 3.3k but the motor is still getting hot.

Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong?

    thanks

What are the motor specs, and what voltage are you using?

What is the definition of very hot? My motors run at temperatures between 43C ( 110F ) and 56C ( 132F ), depending on the run time and the load on the axis, and that is very hot to hold by my hands but is normal for the motorrs. I am monitoring the temperatures constantly so I know the actual temperature of each motor. Perhaps you could measure when you think it is too hot, but if they are below 60C ( below 140F ) I would not worry about it.

This is the motor have - NEMA23 425oz/in 2.8A Stepper Motor ¼” Dual shaft,

I will measure the temperature on it when I work on it next. It is too hot to the touch but I don't know the real temp reading.

thanks for everyone's help on this.

You should be using no more than a 2.8k resistor. Did you read the manual?

I did read the manual. I have tried a 2.8 but still ran hot so I started going up from there.

Is this not a good way to approach it?

    thanks

did you wire as bipolar parallel?

The motor temp should be less than 80 C

No, going up will make it hotter, and could damage the motor. You should be going to a lower value to get it to run cooler. Or running at a lower voltage.

You said it's too hot to touch. If you can hold a finger on it for 5 seconds without getting burned, then it's probably not too hot.

Okay will try some lower resistors and get a temperature reading. Thanks for everyone taking the time to help.

@neatimes. The voltage for your steppers needs to be around to value given be V = 32 * √mH. Under a bit is fine, but don't go over. The spec sheet will give you the value for the available configurations.
