BobArt would be about the only way. But what do you want to grab/Modify? You could get the poly data brought in as line entities. Kindof a mess, but depending on what you need from the stl....
Double post
In BoB you can scale it,change the color and use the .stl for tool path. You can also rotate and translate.
What exactly are you trying to do,,have an example ?
I want to pull some dim's off of an .stl file that I downloaded. The parts would be made on a 3-d printer, but I was just looking to find the sizes of the parts, so that I could find someone with a large enough 3-d printer.
You can open the stl in a poly app and save it as a dxf... This would bring in the faceted line data of all the poly's.... A fairly "general" dimension... Meshlab is a free program you can install and do it with.... (Or do the measuring in Meshlab)
But that would be about as accurate as just "drawing a line in BobCad" and measuring that. Just pick points "close enough" to the edges you want.
If you want to attach the stl I will look at converting the poly data to surface data. It will still be faceted, but you will have access to the edges.
Burr,
Thanks for the info. I have about ten or so files that I need the length, width and height on. Rough dims are fine, as long as I can get a +/- .250" That should be close enough. I'll try the meshlab and see if that works.
Thanks for the help, hope all is well with you and your family.
Can you just select the STL and use "entity Summary" for an overall dimension like that?
All's good. Thanks for the wishes!hope all is well with you and your family.
I don't think I tried to use the entity summary, I will try it on Monday.
