    Spindle RPM limiting factor

    As title says, what will be the limiting factor of a spimdle: is it the generated heath or the max rpm of the bearings installed?

    The design of the spindle, then would come the rated Bearing RPM, then how it is lubricated Oil or Grease, there are many factors that come into play not just the Bearings

    Also rotor inertia and rotor balance is a dependent factor.

    Thanks for the answers.

    So, it looks like, it is not good idea to crank up 18000 to something like 20000. I believe installed bearings in this spindle (china made) are for max 18000.

    @Al

    I understand why balance, but don't understand why rotor inertia is a problem. Could you explain it please. Thanks.

    The centrifugal forces are much greater the larger the mass of the rotor, this is why you see the 20krpm 3ph spindles have such small dia rotors.

    Is this going to be a problem if a max rpm is increased by 10%? Maybe not, but if rotor is not balanced for 20krpm then there is a problem.
