    Slice tube

    Hi,
I'm looking looking for someone to help my son in his project, hey let me put him on. Hi my name is Ian and my project is to reshape some plastic pieces into a figure 8 type of shape. I need 2 x 12"inch x 1''inch I.D ss tube and 2 x 12"inch x 5/8" I.D ss tube sliced lengthways like my picture I made. I am not looking for free, my dad will pay for it, and I will do jobs for him to pay back.
    thank you

True - but custom fixtures cost money.
    Budget?

Yes nothing is free but two alum sleeves should not take long to make . I have help make parts that are tighter then what they are looking for and heat treated. Gary if need be I can pm you the shop info if you can't find someone to make it .

What kind of tolerance are you trying to hold and surface finish ?

    Re: Slice tube

6061 is easy to machine and can be finished nicely. 316 is harder to machine, but finishes nicely.
If you want something which looks the same in 10 years time, I would go for the SS, but for show&tell next week the 6061 will be fine. Passivate the Al surface and keep it salt-free and it could last as well.

Hey roger should have said something about the price difference between them too . 316 will shine up nice and cost more do to machine time / tooling costs

    Re: Slice tube

I was not concerned about the raw material costs - that's up to the 'customer'.
But yeah, 'harder to machine' always means more $$.
Mind you, in this case, I think the setting up and jig-making costs might be the biggest factor.

Looks like 'thin-wall' tubing to me. 20 gauge or similar.

I did say we would get back to this last night but, I worked a straight 18 got home had dinner and time for us to watch the Packers, we were going to go over this at half time but, about 10 minutes into the game, I'm laying on the couch with a blanket over me and it's 6.10am.I heard it was great game it ain't rugby but I'm getting the hang of it lol.
This is the product we were thinking of using and, as shown in the original pics there would be 2 x 1/8" holes drilled 1/2" either side of rear center. Edges to be smoothed.

    Re: Slice tube

Thin-wall Al is better than SS, but even so, it is very likely that when you slice down the length of such a tube it may spring open a bit. I think the SS would certainly spring open, and the Al is likely to do so a bit. That means the cutting may be a bit uneven, as the tube would spring open while it was being machined. Tricky.

Out of curiosity, just what are you making????
And what tolerances are really required?

    Cheers
