    Re: SunDown 5x10 plasma table.

You will notice 4 rows of holes on the main 8x4x3/16 beams. The first set was done with an antique Bridgeport, was off by 60/1000 over 12'2'' the other set was done with a cnc mill, still off by 20/1000, but good enough. This was actually my first time with a vertical mill. Top row for HiWin rail, bottom row for gear rack. Instead of belt driven gear reduction i plan on using 5:1 gearheads with larger pinion gears to get it close to 2.75:1. I have never before attempted to build anything like this.

The current plan is to have the gantry go over one side of the table about 2 feet for the rotary.

    Re: SunDown 5x10 plasma table.

So I think I'll add cross supports in for the legs. Even with 8x4x3/16 frame and 3x3x1/8 cross beams, the table has plenty of flex. Found that out while getting it level on the floor.

The aluminum tslot gantry is ending up more expensive than anticipated. Found that out after ordering 90 self aligning nuts from 8020 at $1.60 each: just under $150 shipped.

Just picked up some 3x3 angle for slat supports, thinking of using 2x3/16 slats(maybe 1/8). That should let me raise the water about a half inch above the top of the slats.

Seems I can get 6x10 foot sheets here for the water pan, so that's good. Water pan Will hold about 200 gallons with depth of just under 6 inches at the center and 5 on the edges. Going to tig me up a water tank soon, unless I find something big enough.

Thanks to all the build threads on here, you guys gave me the knowledge and the motivation to do this.

Would like to hear from anyone that has completed or has any experience with an extended gantry set up for the rotary. Seems it should work and really increase the max size of things the rotary can handle.

Planning to finish this project by Christmas.

Ok, time to get back to work. Mail is here.

Picked up a third 5:1 gearhead a handful of proximity sensors from the scrap yard for a total of $4. Came from discarded compact disk making machines.

Gearhead will need a new mounting plate, spur great will need to have a 16mm bore. Still I think this is cheaper, better, and easier than doing belt gear reduction. Though I have very limited knowledge about any of this.

    Re: SunDown 5x10 plasma table.

Machined some aluminum spacers at 1.340 in to align the rail and gear rack, found that one of the main beams is warped. Couldn't get the spacer tight, got me worried a little. Went to the gas store and filled up the acetylene tank, hit the beam with the torch followed by some cold water. Middle leg dropped about 3/16. Bolted the rack and rail back on, good as can be. Have to touch up the paint, but adding supports anyhow. Disaster averted.

Looks great man keep up the hard work. Im starting a 4 by 4 table right now with a bunch of parts I scavenged, once I get everything working smooth I hope to use the first table to pay for another similar to this build with a extended gamtry and rotary on the side.

Cutting up the water pan and water tank, got 2 6x10 sheets of 11ga. Hopefully have enough for the washer tank. Inside of the frame is 5'6"x11'6"

Hey. I have one of those. Mine weighs about 4 pounds and I can accurately crease paper with it.
Those machines are pretty handy to have sitting around.

    Re: SunDown 5x10 plasma table.

Has been a busy couple days, spent all my money on parts, so have to do some actual work. On top of full time school, nevertheless got the holes enlarged on the pinion gears, and transition plates and shaft bushings modified. I'm not 100% sure on the calculations of the gear ratio, so i went by Dave's build threads.

So basically i got a 5:1 gearhead, and a 30 tooth pinion gear. I think it'll get me somewhere around 3:1

    Re: SunDown 5x10 plasma table.

Yeah, mine is a 6x48 HF model.
Surprisingly though, it works very well. Strong motor. I have been using it for about three years now. Hard use too. Flat sanding stainless steel sheet to get a brushed finish in one direction. Finish up with a 3M coarse mesh belt. It doesn't have a quick release though. That is it's only bad point. I don't use the 9" disc sander either. Have no use for one of those.

When this one dies, I will look for an old iron version to replace it. I won't get that lucky twice from HF.

just looked at the thread on a computer for the first time, its a mess with pictures... Any way i can fix that? I figured out how to add them as attachments instead of having giant pictures everywhere.

On a side note, time to learn some autocad...

Random metric gearheads worked out better than expected. Sterted reinforcing the table, water pan shouldn't fall through now.
