G0704 broken gear - how do I get it out?

G0704 locked up while milling and when I rotate the spindle with the low gear engaged it feels like it has a missing tooth. With high gear engaged it seems normal.

I wanted to pull the intermediate gearshift assembly (I'm making up a name there -- the shaft and gears between the motor and spindle shafts) but can figure out how. The diagram looks like I should be able to pull it straight up. Do I need to remove the E clip first? I need to get some tool for that.

Gah, what a day, almost CNC'd my first part but killed the machine in the process.
