    2000 fadal vmc 3016l

Ran into a problem and need help.
I use my cnc once every couple months, so it will sit untouched for periods at a time. Yesterday I started it up, loaded a program thru the serial port. Jogged all 4 axes, set tool lengths, and fixture origin. Push 'home 1' button, and nothing.... flashes something real quick, and instructs me to jog to cs position and cs. I do, then auto, start program. It starts 1st line of code, then shuts down and scrolls same message. The quick flash of a message says 'updating memory '. I went ahead and left the cnc one for a few hours and retried this morning....same result.
One more thing... when I press jog, the values are moved from the cs position. example.... x.0003 y-.0006 z0 a .0040
Hoping this is an easy fix.

    Any advise is appreciated,

Do you have a computer hooked up to your vmc? If so unplug the rs232 cable and try it again.
I ran into this issue a couple months back.

Look into zeroing the memory. Ive heard that helps when things get screwy, but never had to do it myself.

Make sure to back everything up because it erases everything.

Yes,I tried with and without rs232 hooked up.
I have not zeroed memory yet.
That will be my next step.
Thanks for your suggestions and ideas.

    Try this...

Home to the CS lines then do a CS. Don't just hit start when it boots up.
Once CS starts don't hit the "move to last position" Just hit manual.

Once CS starts go to (7) Axis Zero. (H) for all.

Reboot. That should take care of it.

If not there are a few other axis settings that are pretty easy to compensate for this issue. But one thing at a time.

Tried the CS and the axis zero.
    No change.
Still haven't tried zeroing the memory yet.

No, I never have. Watched a video on youtube on memory upgrade. It seems to follow what I believe I need to do. Also have the original manuals.
But I figure I wont just jump into it, till I hear from those more experienced than I.
I am assuming that since it sat for a couple months, that the battery may have failed. I have left the mill on for a couple hours every other day and it is showing @ 3.5 volts. I will check voltage after the long Christmas weekend.

OK then if after the long weekend the back up battery is flat you will need a replacement, you can purchase it from Fives MSI ( FADAL ) 818-727-2100 opt. 1.
    The part # is ELE-0082 $ 19.00.
If your back up battery did indeed go flat then your parameters in SETP , and the values in your backlash table are not valid, in which case you will have to correct them.
Most of the necessary values for SETP are written behind the pendant door, such as the gain and ramp settings for rigid taping.
The backlash settings you will have to measure yourself and input them through the BL command, accessed through the ENTER NEXT COMMAND screen.
EXAMPLE BL,1,1,1,1 would be 0.0001 inches in all three places in the X axis.
On to how to ZERO the control.
    (1) Back up any programs, fixture offsets, and tool length offsets you want to keep
    (2) Enter SETP at the command line, write down all the parameter settings (on all three pages)(use P to toggle between pages) Assuming your battery is good.
    (3) Enter BL at the command line and write down the valus for X,Y,Z,A axis.
    (4) Enter DI at the command line
    (5) Enter DI G0 3000 at the command line (notice the space between the G0 and 3000)
    (6) A screen you haven't seen before will appear, hit the space bar once, select the option number for ZERO MEMORY,strike the Y key three times, indicating you firmly want to zero the control.
    (7) Select the option to restart the cnc, then power off for 20 sec. and back on.
    (8) Enter SETP at the command line.
    (9) Input all the values you have either written down or have retrieved from behind the pendant door.
    (10) Enter your backlash values.
    (11) 0Type SETTO at the command line to set tool 1 at the spindle.
    (12) MAKE CHIPS !!!!!
Let me know how it goes.

    Best Regards,

If battery checks good let's also look at the power supply. 12v and 5v. I've seen the 5 volt wire on those fluctuate and cause similar issues.

Thanks. Hopefully everyone is having a good start to 2016.

I checked voltage this morning, 3.6v at the battery. started up cnc... and the same situation. jog any axis, no problem, change tools, no problem, command a home axis, nothing.... a quick flash of memory updating, then the jog to zero and cs message.
So I follow Robmac1's instructions again, restart.... and all working again.
This has me concerned. Any Ideas?
    Thanks,
    Javier
