    Help choose motors

    Hi everyone,

I need help choosing motors for my steel milling machine.

From the beginning, I started working on my little project, turning manual steel milling machine in to CNC one.
Mechanical part is clear to me, and I wouldn’t go deeper in electronic part. Problem is (actually there are a lot of problems) that I am not very familiar with steppers and servos.
So, I bought CNC kit (not for this project), to see what is what and how everything works. The kit was TB6560 newest model (replaced capacitors, removed resistors myself) ant 3 stepper motors NEMA 23HS8610, 1amp, 290oz/in (actually I found some info that there is only 190oz/in), and power supply.
Soo, I putted this kit for a test on my milling machine, for, well, you know, see how much it is that 290(or 190)oz/in, what can I do with it. It moved the table, in even drawed me a road runner with pencil. I ended up with 1.5 tone machine, which draws like kindergartener with speed of growing grass. Well, it’s something, I guess…
But the play time is over, time to ramp things up. Need some real pushing power with reasonable speed.
Steppers (without encoder) are not an option, because of accuracy issues.
So it’s closed loop stepper or servo. Which would be better for my application?
    How powerful should they be?

P.S. money is limited, for this I have 500€ with little wiggle room.

In a CNC retro fit it is normal to fit ballscrews in place of the Acme screws
You need at least 40lb-in motors with a 2:1 reduction.

Ballscrews, yes, in future, definitely. But for now Acme screws work like charm, table moves smoothly.
    40lb/in sounds good.
Now the last part of all questions: should I pick servo or stepper (closed loop)?
As far as I know, servo motor can stop everything if its stalls. Stepper jumps of and lose accuracy. What stepper with closed loop system do if it stalled?

And 40 lb/in by rotary, detent or holding torque?
