    plunge router as z-axis

I was looking at some plunge routers the other day and in mindset of KISS, why could it serve as the basis for the movable z-axis?

You would need to fix the base, and attach the router body to a screw, but could this not work???

First thing that I hear you say is that it depends on the uprights in which the plunge action happens, but most of these are pretty sturdy and move quite easily.

    Hmmmmmm, any thoughts?

Most anything will work if it is accurate and does the job without too much cost. I thought of the plunge router for awhile, but it does move a little. Or you could crank up instead of plunge down. Turn it upside down. Try www.woodpeck.com. These are tight, but pricey.

If you take off the D-handle and attach it to a screw then you can use the step motor to plunge the router up/down. What the plunge base eliminates is the z-axis linear bearings/guides.
