Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster cut height question

    Hi,

I have a little Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38 with a 30amp drag tip. I use a floating head without THC set to zero at each cut.

What height off the material should the pierce height and the cut height be?

    Thanks

Don't have an answer for you.

Just curious, will it establish an arc if the tip is above and not touching the material?

Refer to your operators manual for the cutmaster for correct cut height. Most likely it is somewhere between .06" and .120".....depending on the consumables you are using.

I would say on .190 mild steel, .1500 Pierce height, and a .1200 cut height would be correct.(about max pierce) Same with settings on .135. 16 ga. you could drop down even more..

Thanks for thoughts. Interesting to see your settings.

My current settings on 3mm (16ga.) mild steel
    pierce height of 8mm
    cut height of 1mm

These settings are somewhat arbitrary though, I guess i was trying to emulate the drag cut idea without actually touching the steel.

Interesting to see the standoff you suggest and how close your piece and cut height are. I'll try your setting and see how that works.

Just out of interest whats your pierce delay and feed rate on 16ga. ?

    Thanks

Here is a copy of a manual sent to me from TD support.. it has cut charts that you can use... Its for the Cutmaster A40 which would be close to your TD 38

Thanks for this. I just read through the A40 manual for the cut and pierce heights. It gives a cut height of 3.56mm. Just out of interest I checked the Cutmaster 10 manual, which has the same 30A max as mine. It states 'For standoff cutting, hold the torch 1/8 - 3/8 in (3-9 mm)' Further down in the material and feed speed it states the standoff as between 0-1.6mm?

I'll need to write to them, no point in blowing out more tips..
