Hi all. I have an ACCU Mill with ball screws and a Centroid controller. This is a CNC retrofit. I have a problem with the X axis screw. There is lateral movement of the lead screw before the table moves. This is NOT backlash and the ball screw is not damaged. You can physically see the shaft move "in and out". This has caused roughly a .020 slop in the table movement. I suspect something is missing from one end of the shaft or the other. the drive motor is on the operators right. If you tighten the indicator dial (on the operators left) it removes the excess play. I have no diagram for this particular mill or for the retrofit. Even the company that does the retrofits on these machines seems to be of no help. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The thrust bearing is not doing what it should. Sounds like a washer is missing...

There has to be something that holds the lead screw from moving axially.

I was thinking of something along those lines. Is the lead screw normally captured on both ends or just on the one end? One of my problems is that this is on an army base and I'm not allowed to dig into it....this has to be done by an outside contractor.

Could be both ends or but usually one end if doing the work.

Take pictures and show us what the ends look like.
