While I continue reading this thread... I just wanted to ask are all X2 machines the same?

I was able to find a Grizzly G8689 and a harbor freight X2.. they cost about the same...

I want to place an order asap , but wanted to have confirmation from someone first.

The only difference is color between those two mills.

if that is the case, I'll take the better deal (I like the red color better, but I don't mind saving $40 for the green one instead)

    One more thing..
I hear a lot of people talk about kelinginc.net and their G540 w/ 381 stepper motors combo

anyway, the website show a few combos (some almost identical but with 387 oz-in stepper motors) which is the best match for the X2 mini mill w/ a CNC fusion #4 kit?

    G540 3 axis package (One G540 + Three
    NEMA 23 KL23H284-35-4B (1/4” Dual shaft with a flat) 387 oz-in +
    one KL-350-48 48V/7.3A 115V /230V power supply: $455.95 ?

    thanks

No the grizzly has an MT3 spindle, the Harbor Freight has the much preferred R8.

The 381 package is technically the better one but if they are out of stock, the 387's are perfectly fine, the difference is minimal.

Thanks Hoss, I'm looking at your videos as I type... how many X2 do you have??

If it's just one X2, then you have more attachments and pieces than an autobot

Just the one but it has undergone a few changes over the years.
It's backordered but you should have a peek at the LMS SX2, it has more travels
    and a better motor.
Might be worth the wait if you can.
cncfusion has a kit for it too.

What do you mean by "more travels"? longer x and y distances?

What are the specs of the X2 in terms of work area? (X,Y,Z)?

  10. #1010
The typical X2 xyz travels are about 8x4x8, the SX2 is about 12x5x9.

Hooked it up to the Shumatech DRO though and it works just fine.
Glad that's what I bought it for because it would be useless without the DRO.

I posted a video for some Freak converts but it could be helpful to the many
regular CNC converts. Made a mod to the base that lets the ballscrew be changed much easier.

YouTube- Replacing X2 Freak Y Axis Ballscrew
Sure wish I had known about this thread back when Hoss was first writing it. It would have been fun to be part of the dialog. This along with all of his other threads and web site(s) are just terrific!

I am in the middle of doing my Hoss-conversion now and this post in particular is timely because I just finished re-cutting the dovetails in the base and extending the Y travel. Now I can do this mod to help get the ballscrews in and out. I was worried that I would never put in oversized balls to adjust the backlash because I would be too lazy to take it all apart again. Now I don't have to.

Hoss to the rescue again!!! (Who is that masked man?)
