Design and Make with CNC Router Parts - Video Projects

We thought we'd share some of our recent "Design and Make" How-to CNC projects with the forum community. Let us know what you'd like to see next (or less of) and anything else that might make these more useful or interesting for you.

The first project I'll share is a 3D Sculpted solid-body Electric Guitar. We teamed up with Jeff Strater @ Autodesk Fusion 360 to design and make this Guitar on our Benchtop PRO CNC Machine.

Fair Warning: While Jeff and I both like to design and make things, neither of us are instrument designers, luthier's, etc. This project is primarily intended for education, personal enjoyment, and customization & improvement. That is to say, if you'd like to carve-up a $300 piece of wood using this project, you might want to start with cheaper wood and make sure you like the setup first!

The Fusion 360 design file and CAM sources (and write-up) are posted on our 3D Sculpted Guitar Thingiverse project

Jeff and I made several videos to outline the design, CAM programming, and CNC process we followed. The rest of the videos are available on our 3D Sculpted Guitar series playlist

You can subscribe to the CNC Router Parts YouTube Channel here, and go back and browse some of our previous project videos.

    Happy National Robotics Week everyone!

Cool vid guys, and a great overview of CAM operations in F360 to boot.

    A couple questions:

    1) When you zeroed the 1/8" bit, I noticed you didn't clean off the sawdust under the touch plate..... maybe a good thing to watch for?

    2) I watched your other vids on the the modeling, and maybe I missed it, but did you just use the exact thickness of your wood blank for the stock thickness, and offset the model in the middle of it?

    3) what did you use for the stopover value on the final finishing operation with the 1/4" bit?

    Thanks.

Sure, it is best practice to make sure the touch plate sits as flush as possible on the surface you are sensing. Compressed air works great.

The wood blank is modeled in the project at the actual thickness (as measured), the guitar body is biased such that the back of the guitar is 1/16th below the surface of the blank.

The stepover shown in the video is 0.05" for the 3D finishing operation
