I have now spend quite some time with a smart shop 1. It's ok... Seems like a lot of money to get such a bad controller. Essentially it's a Chinese import, with a dime store hardware controller. The only feature I really like is the automatic tool length setter. The machine overall is pretty solid in terms of construction. I It's pretty quiet, but I still suspect that the motors are steppers instead of servo's. Now that I have had the pleasure of this, I know I what I want when I buy my own. I will likely also buy Chinese iron and then add my own servo's, drivers, and motion controller. Having a better controller would be really nice to do multiple parts and offsets. I would also not spend this kind of money without a tool changer. The spindle is really unimpressive for 6 Hp. My Porter Cable 3Hp hand router can probably put out similar power. A dedicated spindle like this should be MUCH more powerful than a hand router.
