6040 4th Axis for Square Tubing?

    Hi All,

Newbie here, in need of a small CNC for some prototyping and I'm wondering if the 6040 CNC 4 axis setup is capable of milling on sq. tubing or sq stock on the 4th axis, or if it has to be round.

    Thanks!

Edit- to clarify, looking to achieve an asymmetric cut or a cut through all sides of a square tube.

With the fourth axis you can cut square or round depending on the material is what will decide if the 6040 will cut it most of them are pretty lightweight (for shipping) and therefore not exactly rigid so wood or acrylic probably, aluminium possibly if you get a good one and use shallow DOC and steel doubtful, having seen a few 6040 machines in for repair I decided to build somthing far more substantial a little bigger for a lot less money.

Based on the units on eBay the chucks are attached to the 'spindle' via a 3 hole pattern. 80mm 4 jaw chucks are commonly available - Might have to make up an adapter plate, but I can't see a reason why you couldn't add a 4 jaw. You COULD use the 3 jaw for square stock, but that's definitely not SOP.
