Upgrading my pro4848 to pro4896 plus 4th Axis

i always planned on having a 4by8 machine but i didn't have space for a year ago when i purchased my pro4848 so one of the many reasons i purchased the cncrp kit was that it was so simple to upgrade later. in addition to the size i also wanted a 4th Axis and the abuility to cut the end grain of a board if i decide to do dovetails or any other joinery.

the first thing i did was upgrade the table. my existing table was a torsion box design, i removed the Z axis and then the gantry and lifted the frame with a couple pullies off the rafters above. i then made a new 49" by 97" torsion box and used the same legs.

from there the upgrade was pretty similar to the original build. the upgrade came with no instructions but i struggled along.

the kit came with 6 of these black metal inserts with set screws that help align the 80/20 sections with eachother.

2 go on the outside of each side, i don't know what i was supposed to do with the last 2. since the top and bottom will have the bracket and the inside of the 80/20 will have the cross beam. so they went on in a drawer where they will sit forever.

i used the rack from the other side to help align it as i tightened down the bolts

and then the cable chain, i had to remove the ends of the old one and the new to connect them into one long cable and then reconnect it to the gantry

Re: Upgrading my pro4848 to pro4896 plus 4th Axis

next i build up the area for the 4th axis, my intention is to have the 4th axis that can be installed and removed quickly and when removed the table hides its mounting location

i got the 4th axis and tail stock on ebay.

my plan for mounting is to glue 2 layers of 3/4 mdf and then cut out space for the tracks which will hold the 4th axis and tail stock.

    Thanks for posting.

I'm looking forward to seeing the final mounting of the rotary axis.

I hope to start my 48x96 build in about a month or so.

Another way to mount it and still have 100% use of the full table is to mount it on the end. I did this here in my thread on post # 116 http://www.cnczone.com/forums/cnc-ro...ftware-10.html

Thank you for your post I like your setup. I will do something like it.

I also have been thinking of setting up a jtech laser and adding a shield. If I can make it "quick change" between the router and laser then it's a new dimension of play.
